Just to be clear, right up front, I want to let you know that, yes I did receive these full-size products from Bioré in exchange for me testing them. But you know me, and you know I am still going to be completely honest about my experience using both the Bioré Baking Soda Pore Cleanser and the Cleansing Scrub. The latter actually comes in a powder form, which is pretty neat. It is the ultimate in concentrated products, because why waste the weight and space on water when it can easily be added during use. In that way it is actually kind of eco-friendly by reducing emissions during shipping, long story but if they can fit more units on one truck by keeping water out, that makes a huge difference in how much fuel is expended to ship these products to stores. But, more on all of the benefits of a dry scrub later. For now, here is what Bioré says about why they included Baking Soda as one of the main ingredients, “with its natural ability to deep clean and gently exfoliate, baking soda is your new secret weapon in the fight for clean pores. These cleansers powerfully purify pores, absord oil and gently exfoliate skin. You’ll see instantly smoother, softer and visibly tighter pores after just one use.” Overall, given my experience, I agree with that.

On testing day, I used the cleanser in the morning and the scrub at night to really get a feel for each experience. The scrub, really any scrub, is meant to be used 2-3 times a week only. The cleanser itself has what I want to believe are tiny little grains of baking soda in it, so using the scrub too often would definetly be overkill. Too much scrubbing can leave a person’s skin with tiny micro cuts that cause damage to its surface. You don’t want that! So, as with any scrub, follow the instructions. The Bioré Baking Soda Pore Cleanser is a foaming cleanser, so it is great for people who prefer that. I’m actually more of a milk based cleanser person as I find most foaming cleansers are too drying. That is still the case here unfortunately, so especially at this time of year, I needed to follow-up with a good moisturizer, despite the product saying it won’t overdry combination skin. Also, because it is an exfoliating cleanser and has a slight tingly feeling, it is not appropriate for use around your eyes or for removing eye make-up. I think this product will be perfect for after a sweaty yoga session in the summer. The tingly sensation will feel so refreshing on my warm skin and that is the one time a good foaming cleanser feels best to me.

Disclaimer: The above product may or may not contain micro-beads, if it does, I would prefer not to recommend it given the impact micro-beads have on our environment.

On to my review of the scrub; I kind of love it! I already told you about how it is eco-friendly by not including the water, but there is another benfit to adding the water as you use it. When you add the water, you decide how intense the scrub will be and how quickly the product naturally dissolves. You are totally in control of the experience here, which I absolutely love! I think its great that the product dissolves on its own, so over-scrubbers can’t damage their skin. I worked in retail cosmetics stores for about 3 years during university and college and that was a genuine concern as micro dermabrasion kits were just starting to be sold over the counter. So as I’ve said before, scrubs are only for 2-3 times a week and should always be followed up by a moisturizer. I have a feeling this product will last a long time because without water in an air tight container, it simply won’t spoil as quickly as it would otherwise. Also, you don’t need much of the product to cover your whole face, neck and chest…. never forget your neck and chest when it comes to every single step of your facial skin care routine. This product foams in a way that feels light and fluffy in your hands and on your face. It has a fizzy sensation that is quite enjoyable and again, the texture is very cooling. It also smells pretty amazing!

Overall, or in case, you are currently thinking, this review is too long, I didn’t read it… YES to the Bioré Baking Soda Scrub (7/10) and MAYBE to the Bioré Baking Soda Pore Cleanser (5/10), because if you love a foaming cleanser, this may be perfect for you.
