Adult Colouring & Swearing for Self Care

IMG_7837Fuck is not only the most versatile word in the English language but if you ask me, it is also the best. A personal favourite word for almost every situation, it was also the first swear word I ever use. I can’t remember whether it was my sister or our friends that told but despite the punishment I received, I never learned and still love the word today. Of course, I am generally capable of not using that language when it is inappropriate but a part of me resents that I can’t just use that word all the time. There are far worse words that don’t seem to elicit the reaction that “fuck” does. In fact, I have been on the receiving end of some of those words and I’ll take a swear word over a slur word any day of the week.

In case you have been living under a rock for the last couple of years, adult colouring is totally a thing now. Those of us working in counselling based professions have known about the power of artwork, specifically, the power of colouring to relax an individual. Colouring also serves to break down communication barriers because it is often easier to talk about something serious without having to make eye contact and while keeping one’s hands occupied. Colouring books are good for reducing stress, consider it a different form of meditation. So I am really glad to see this finally take hold in the mainstream, and I’m only kind of saying, “I told you so”, to the early critics. You can now find colouring books in every bookstore, at many gift stores and often even on the magazine racks by the cash register at some grocery stores. It seems to me that people can’t get enough.

The best part about this new trend really taking off is that there is something for everyone. As a huge fan of swearing, one of my personal favourites is the You Can Do Whatever The Fuckety Fuck You Want colouring book by Bad Words Books. It has 21 single sided images that all contain swear word affirmations similar to the title of the book. Single sided pages are important, especially if you want to use markers like I do so that you can avoid any bleeding onto the next page. I would still recommend that you be careful with dark colours like black as I had a bit of an oops moment on one design. It is basically a colouring book pep talk for yourself. It comes complete with bad words and beautiful images that are just waiting for you to add some colour. I love how the designs give you a range of options from complex detail to very simple, something for everyone.

The first image I decided to colour was the one for “Fuck Everyone Else’s Opinion” as I do love the floral images the most and when I posted it on Snapchat (MsLindsayMarie) people loved it. So I’m giving one of these badass colouring books away to one lucky reader of this blog.
