As you know if you have been reading my blog, I consider a part of body positivity to include being sex positive. Our bodies, in most cases, were designed to be sexual beings. Being positive about ourselves as whole human beings includes being positive about our sexuality. So when The Kink Kit contacted me to review their new subscription box, I was happy to oblige. This post is for adults only as I will be discussing sex toys and other kinky things. The Unbound Subscription Box is filled with tons of sexy surprises and I had the chance to try out their Delta Box recently and want to tell you about it. Plus, I have a special discount code below for you to get 30% off from Unbound. I love good packaging and that is the first thing I noticed about the Unbound Gift Box. The outer shipping box is discrete with no obvious labels, but the inner gift box is beautifully wrapped with a ribbon. The glossy black is perfect for my preferred aesthetic and I will absolutely be able to re-use the box itself to gift someone else something gorgeous or to store secret treasures of my own. Fuck is not only the most versatile word in the English language but if you ask me, it is also the best. A personal favourite word for almost every situation, it was also the first swear word I ever use. I can’t remember whether it was my sister or our friends that told but despite the punishment I received, I never learned and still love the word today. Of course, I am generally capable of not using that language when it is inappropriate but a part of me resents that I can’t just use that word all the time. There are far worse words that don’t seem to elicit the reaction that “fuck” does. In fact, I have been on the receiving end of some of those words and I’ll take a swear word over a slur word any day of the week. Continue reading “Adult Colouring & Swearing for Self Care”
I love yoga, but I always found going to a studio-based class to be quite intimidating. I would end up feeling disconnected from my practice and meditation as a result. Occasionally, the local yoga studio where I live would offer a 5-week rotation of curvy yoga classes, but that was it. Given the special nature of the class, or as they called it, a workshop, the cost was not included in the monthly studio membership fee and was based on signing up for all 5 classes, regardless of your schedule of prior commitments. Unfortunately, that made it inaccessible to me in the long run and so I decided to adopt a home based practice. I purchased a bunch of gear and dedicated an entire room in my apartment to yoga and meditation. It now gets used for the occasional blog photo shoot as well, as you can see here. Trösta means care. It is a Swedish verb that means to comfort, console or give solace. A perfect description for the feeling that this new monthly subscription box will provide. It is the perfect gift for the person who wants to create a self-care routine but who needs a little bit of guidance getting started. Ideal for busy individuals who don’t have time to seek out the quality tools they need to practice self-care on a regular basis. Let’s face it, the less time you spend seeking out candles and bath bombs, the more time you have available to enjoy them. What is more convenient than having these supplies delivered directly to your door, once a month, just like clockwork? It’s certainly much easier than the alternative.
The products inside of the Trösta Box are designed to appeal to our senses and to meet our physical, emotional and mental needs. As you have read before on this blog, I believe that good mental wellness is critical to overall body positivity and that true self-love must include your body, your heart, and your mind. The Trösta Box has a little bit of everything, perfect for taking care of each and every part of you. The products in the box will leave you feeling relaxed and grounded, not to mention, they will leave you and your home smelling absolutely amazing! Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of coming home to a surprise gift every month? Continue reading “Trösta Box for Self Care”
I have struggled with symptoms of anxiety since my final year in high school. It was at its peak from age 18 – age 24, which was also the same time that I was sexual assaulted and that my eating disorder was most active. I don’t believe that one caused the others but I do think that when I eat in a way that is no longer disordered, my body is better at coping with stress. That when I am mental well, I am better able to take care of my physical health. That is why I believe that self-care and body positivity are connected. For all of that time and for many years after, I was prescribed anti-anxiety medication. It worked for me at the time and in many situations, it was practically life-saving. My use of these medications slowly decreased as I learned ways to cope with and manage my emotions through yoga, meditation, self-care and counselling. I still had a desire to have a few anti-anxiety pills in my possession for those “just in case” types of moments and would use them around once a month on extremely stressful days. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a family doctor, as a result of moving to rural northern Ontario, where services are not as abundant as they are in more centrally located urban areas. So I needed to find another way to manage my remaining symptoms and since I didn’t have a doctor, I knew it had to be something natural or that I could buy over the counter at the local pharmacy.
When I stumbled upon Trinkets Jewellery, I knew I had found a woman owned company whose mission I could fully support. This is because they are all about using unretouched photos and selfies of women to advertise their jewellery. Instead of showing each of their items on models that most of us can’t relate to and that may even make some of us feel insecure, they have chosen to request selfies from their fans to use on their website sales pages. You should absolutely, click through to Fiona’s jewellery blog and check out all of the beautiful women she has featured in her statement necklaces. You will also be able to find out how you can get involved. As the creator of #SelfiesForSelfLove, I think it is probably pretty obvious why I support this idea but in case this is the first time you have read my blog, let me elaborate a little. Self-care is so important, this really cannot be overstated. As a person whose day job is in the helping field, this is particularly important. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “you can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself” because it is true. Self-care can take on many forms, from yoga, hot bubble baths and body scrubs to running, volunteering and cuddling puppies. The action itself is defined by you and only you, the only thing that matters is that you take the time to take care of yourself on a regular basis. I really find the process of an exfoliating body and face scrub, cleansing shower and then moisturizing oil session is a good way for me to take a 20-minute break from the day. Joe Scrub is kind of perfect for this because it recommends that you leave the scrub on for 5-10 minutes for best results. I find this time is perfect for a bit of an unofficial mediation. I think a lot of people think meditation needs to occur on a yoga mat or while sitting alone on the ground in a small room. All that meditation needs to be is you clearing your mind of thoughts, which I do by focusing on one mantra expressing my intention for the day or coming week. The simplest thing I ever meditate on is one word, usually something along the lines of Peace or Serenity. Repeating the word anytime my mind wanders. You can also download guided meditations that are really helpful, especially when you are first giving meditation a try. Let me know in the comments, what works best for you.
